For all the talent M.I.A. collaborates with, her wordplay and delivery does not feel as if it’s grown since she first started. Her music constantly depends on visual references (in music videos/short films) for their political weight. If a piece of music doesn’t carry enough depth on it’s own, the question becomes for me, is it music or some kind of interdisciplinary art project? I think that way about cats like Das Racist a lot too. Though they’re far more straightforward about how anti-serious they are about their craft. Not that this makes it impossible to enjoy because I love this video so much.
